Graduate Program: Scholarships and Awards

The Frank and Lila Gilman Memorial Fellowship was established by a bequest from Wilbur Gilman in honor of his parents. Wilbur Gilman was the first Chair of the Department (then the Department of Speech and Dramatic Art) in 1940. The Gilman Fellowship provides a scholarship to an outstanding doctoral student who is pursuing rhetorical studies and who demonstrates exemplary scholarship in rhetoric courses.

Loren Reid taught at the University of Missouri from 1935-1938 and again from 1944-1999. He served as the chair of the department from 1947-1952. He is considered an important leader in the discipline of Communication and a significant influence for many students. Loren Reid is honored by the Loren Reid Outstanding Graduate Teaching Awards. This award recognizes two graduate teaching assistants for their outstanding contributions in the classroom.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award is awarded to a superior graduate student and is selected by peers.
