Undergraduate Program: Admissions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a Communication Major?
You must complete and turn in an application form (pdf). The department has a selective admission policy. Student interest in the department has increased steadily over the past several years. To best serve the students in the program, it is necessary to limit the number of majors in the program.
What requirements must I meet before I apply?
- You may apply for admission during the semester in which you will complete 45 hours of coursework.
- You must have a GPA competitive with other applicants in the semester that you apply. Although a GPA of 2.5 does NOT guarantee admission, it is the lowest ever considered. Your GPA is computed only on the basis of coursework completed in the University of Missouri system as adjusted by the MU grade repeat policy. It is listed as the CUM GPA on the transcript. Transfer grades are not used to calculate the GPA for admission to the Communication Department. (revised 2/11/2002)
- You must have taken and completed one Communication course at the University of Missouri in Columbia with a grade of B- or better. Comm 1200, Comm 2100, Comm 2500 or Comm 3100 are suggested.
- You must have a competitive grade point average in Communication courses completed at MU.
- You must have completed Math 1100 or 1120 and English 1000.

Students are admitted as majors during the Fall and Winter semesters. The application deadline is noon on the 3rd Monday of September for a Fall admission. The Winter semester deadline is noon of the 2nd Monday of February. Late applications are not accepted. You can print a copy of the Admission Form (pdf) or you can obtain a copy in 115 Switzler Hall.
