The Department of Communication
Scholarships recognize the talent and ability of many of our outstanding
students. Grade point average, instructor evaluations, and
relevant extracurricular activities are among the criteria used
by faculty to determine the awards. To be eligible for a Department
of Communication Scholarship, your application for admission to
the department must have been accepted and you must have completed
12 hours of coursework in the department by the end of the semester
in which you apply.
The
Outstanding Senior Award is awarded to the graduating senior
in the Department of Communication with the highest grade point
average.
The
Joseph Wolfe Award is named after
a respected and treasured retired faculty member and is presented
to an outstanding graduating senior who specializes in television
studies. This individual must have an excellent grade point average
and be a "good citizen" of the department.
Barton Griffith came to the University of Missouri in 1957 and
retired as a professor emeritus of communication in 1991. He died
in 1996 and this award honors his tremendous dedication to students
and his wonderful sense of humor. The Barton
Griffith Award is presented to a graduating senior who is
studying television and exhibits a generous spirit, a keen intellect,
and a warm heart.
Loren Reid taught at the University of Missouri from 1935-1938
and again from 1944-1999. He served as the chair of the department
from 1947-1952. He is considered an important leader in the discipline
of Communication and a significant influence for many students.
The Loren Reid Award is bestowed upon
the graduating senior with the most outstanding performance in the
Senior Project capstone course.
