A Message from Dr. Mitchell McKinney

Dear Mizzou Comm Alums,

As you know, we’ve had quite a momentous year at MU and particularly within the Department of Communication. Despite the many challenges that we’ve faced, I’m pleased to report that on so many fronts, we’re making great progress and continuing to build an outstanding department. In fact, our number of undergraduate majors is now at an all-time high, we have a tremendous cohort of new graduate students set to arrive in August, and we’re poised to add as many as four new faculty members in the fall. Still, with a steady barrage of local, state, and national media attention focusing on campus and department events throughout the past several months, we know our Mizzou Comm “brand” has endured close scrutiny and criticism.

Since last fall, my primary concern and major focus of attention has been devoted to our Switzler Hall community, our students, and our faculty. I can assure you that throughout this rather tumultuous period, our united faculty has worked diligently to foster an environment of concern and care for our students while promoting our core values of respect, responsibility, discovery, and excellence. What has sustained me personally during the past several months has been a tremendous spirit of collegiality among my faculty colleagues, and an obvious commitment shared by all—despite any differences of personal opinions—for doing what is best for our department.

I have also been focused on another core element of our Mizzou Comm community, our valued alums. Since November of last year, I’ve heard from and responded to thousands of individuals, including a number of our alumni. I encourage you, as a graduate of our program, to contact me and share your thoughts regarding your MU Department of Communication. I welcome the opportunity to hear and respond to your questions and concerns, suggestions, and ideas as we now move forward in our mission to build a communication program that we’re all proud of. Please contact me at McKinneyM@missouri.edu

I hope to hear from you and thank you for being an important part of our Mizzou Comm community!

Sincerely,

Mitchell S. McKinney
