Koyena Biswas is a third-year doctoral student of Communication.

Koyena is passionate about research in Organizational Communication, specifically institutional organizing within academia and non-profit organizations. She focuses on the confluence of feminist, intersectional, and anti-colonial scholarship to understand the socio-material influences and consequences of structural injustices. At the core of her work is human dignity. She questions knowledge construction and its legitimacy because dignity is harmed when the value of a human consciousness is undervalued in global systems of knowledge. She obsesses over questions such as what counts as knowledge and whose voice has the capacity to be heard. To address inequities, we must first understand the world's hierarchy of knowledge. She examines the internalized metatheoretical (epistemological and axiological) assumptions that enable or disable accepted organizational structures such as hierarchy, seniority, management, culture, communication, identity, and relationship. She wants to leverage her theoretical and practical knowledge in communication to create spaces and platforms that foster equitable and dignified learning communities.

Koyena loves to have meaningful philosophical conversations with people who ask questions about life like herself. She loves to travel for new climbing and hiking experiences. She enjoys cooking and experimenting with food from different cultures that she has experienced. Music and dancing connect her to the present when she is tired of overthinking!
