Bio

Emily Lorenz is a PhD candidate and communication educator, and a long-time Mizzou Tiger. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and she has taught at Mizzou since 2018. 

Emily’s research lies at the intersection of media effects and health communication. She studies how media use and portrayals affect health and well-being, and how family discussions shape those effects. Using a mixed-method approach, Emily explores the impact of media on attitudes, beliefs, and health outcomes, offering practical insights for families and researchers. She has presented her work at conferences such as the National Communication Association and has published her research in journals including Psychology of Popular Media.  

In addition to her scholarly work, Emily continues to improve her teaching through experience and education. She is working on her Minor in College Teaching and has taken many seminars on online instruction and teaching with AI. She received the Loren Reid Memorial Graduate Teaching Award in 2023. Emily’s teaching focuses on creating a collaborative classroom, fostering critical thinking, and using active learning techniques. She has taught many courses, including Health Communication, Public Speaking,  Communication Research Methods, and Business and Professional Communication.
